With Passive Authentication the integrity and authenticity of the data (like MRZ info, photo of face) is verified based on a list of trusted country certificates.

In other words, whether an eMRTD was officially produced on behalf of the nation that issued it and whether the data it contains has been changed in any way since its production.

Refer to ICAO Doc 9303 Part 11 in particular.
